411: Kicking off its 54th season, the Lighthouse ArtCenter will showcase 112 provocative works by 35 faculty members in its new exhibition, “Faculty, Ceramics, and 3D.” Gallery-goers will explore portraits, textiles, pottery, bronzes, and mixed media by local area artists including coastal paintings by Karen Leffel-Massengill, Alessandra Gieffer’s vibrant pastels, and Jim Rigg’s watercolor works of flowers and underwater wildlife. On September 21, the gallery will host an opening reception and awards ceremony from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres, chat with faculty about their installations, and learn about future workshops and classes. 411: One, two, cha, cha, cha! Brazilian Beat, South Florida’s most energetic celebration honoring Brazilian independence, returns with a bombastic mix of Zumba performances, carnival dancers, samba drummers, and a Capoeira circle that features a rhythmic form of martial arts performed inside a human ring of singers, musicians, and other fighters. Kicking off her U.S. debut tour in Boca Raton, Brazilian singer, songwriter, and author Vanessa da Mata (pictured) will perform new and iconic tunes and deep-throated melodies from her Latin Grammy Award-winning album, Sim. Miami’s Batuke Samba Funk will open for the South American songstress. Complimentary parking and trolley service will be available.
What: Mazie’s and Oceano Kitchen Dinner Collaboration (RESCHEDULED TO OCT. 1)
When: Sunday, Sept. 10, starts at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Oceano Kitchen, 201 E. Ocean Ave., Lantana
$$$: $78 per person; extra $25 for wine pairings
411: Ahead of its January opening, Mazie’s chef Eric Baker and his partner Jason Lakow will treat guests to an exclusive tasting of menu highlights. Prepared in collaboration with Oceano’s chef Jeremy Bearman and his wife and pastry chef Cindy Bearman, the six-course culinary extravaganza will include dishes like lobster Thermidor, lamb meatloaf, and Concord grape cream pie with whipped buttermilk and honeycomb peanut brittle. Hurry, though. Seating is limited.
Before helming Max’s Harvest in Delray Beach, Baker worked in leading kitchens throughout South Florida and alongside top chefs like Michael Roth and Jean-Georges Vongerichten in Paris and Daniel Boulud at Café Boulud in Palm Beach. Lakow, another Café Boulud alum, will serve as Mazie’s general manager and his wife Sandra, a Harvard Law School graduate-cum-sommelier, will manage the bar program. Housed inside the former Gulfstream Bistro space on Dixie Hwy., the 65-seat, West Palm eatery will present a modern slant on Old World-style fare galvanized by Baker’s paternal grandmother, Mazie, who immigrated to the United Stated in the 1890s.
