Summertime is all about hitting the beach to soak up as much sun as we can can here in Massachusetts. From the South Shore to Cape Cod, here’s a look at five of the best beach destinations south of Boston that you won’t want to miss this summer.

1 Duxbury Beach

Duxbury Beach Reservation Inc.
Duxbury Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the South Shore. Best known for its white sandy beach, excellent bird watching and drive-on location for cooking and picnicking, The Duxbury Beach Reservation, Inc. is the current owner of the beach and is committed to preserving the ecological value of the beach and making it available as a recreational resource for Duxbury residents and the general public. The Reservation takes great care to protect the nesting of the piping plovers that return each summer. From rowing and sailing to horseback riding and paddle boarding, you can find it all at this South Shore haute spot where you will also see some of the best sunsets just north of Cape Cod.

2 Race Point Beach

National Park Service
Take your dog and head as far to the outer Cape as you can go to the duneside town of Provincetown. The pet friendly beach is located along the north face of the Atlantic Ocean. Expect to find lots of sun all day along with a strong surf, so be sure to take your pet for a swim in the early morning hours.

3 Seagull Beach

Town of Yarmouth
The largest beach in Yarmouth, Seagull Beach is also one of the most popular on Cape Cod. Best known for its beautiful saltwater beach, it has a large parking lot, concession stand, bathhouse and shower facilities. Located on Nantucket Sound, you can play volleyball, go windsurfing, collect seashells, watch the sailboats pass by or simply take a refreshing dip in the ocean. Surprisingly enough, there aren't a lot of seagulls at this mid-Cape haute spot.

4 Coast Guard Beach

National Park Service
Located right on the Atlantic on outer Cape Cod, Coast Guard Beach is situated perfectly before the end of the Cape. Take Route 6E almost as far as you can and stop in the town of Eastham for one of the Cape's best beaches. The outer beach of Cape Cod is named for the notorious graveyard for more than 3,000 ships since the wreck of the Sparrowhawk in 1626. There is a shuttle bus from the parking lot east of Salt Pond Visitor's Center so it's easily accessible. Once you get there, you can cool off in the beautiful ocean, hit the waves for some surf or take in the beautiful views.

5 Sandy Neck Beach

Town of Barnstable
Located on the upper Cape section, Sandy Neck Beach is located just off Route 6A in Barnstable. The six-mile barrier beach on Cape Cod Bay offers acres of beautiful dunes, maritime forests, and marshes to explore. Sandy Neck has been designated a Cultural Historical District for the many antique dune shacks and cottages that line the shore, including the Sandy Neck Lighthouse.
