Quick Hits: Why You Need to Book A Weekend Getaway to Nantucket

From the pristine beaches and cobblestone streets to the bike paths and remote lighthouses, Nantucket is a gorgeous island unto itself. You can choose to do everything here or nothing at all and that’s the biggest decision you will have to make while on island. Much of the appeal for a weekend getaway here is largely due to its simplistic beauty – a place where Bostonians come to escape the hustle and bustle of city living in search of serenity.

The easiest way to get here is by way of Hy-Line Cruises one-hour ferry from Hyannis direct to Straight Wharf (pets are permitted on board) and just steps from all of the restaurants and shops in Nantucket Town. Nantucket is small enough to get around without a car (bring your bike or rent one on island), but you will want to stay right near all of the action in the town center. One of the best places to do just that is The Cottages & Lofts at Boat Basin. The Cottages at the Boat BasinPhoto Credit: The Cottages at the Boat Basin

Nantucket is an extremely pet friendly island and The Cottages at the Boat Basin not only welcome pets, but roll out the red carpet for them. When you book a stay in one of the one or two bedroom “Woof Cottages” (we recommend the two-bedroom Three Brothers cottage), your four-legged friend will be welcomed with luxe amenities that include a personalized pet tag, tennis ball, food and water bowls, dog treats, a pet bed along with pet-friendly docks to go for a walk overlooking the marina with 240 boat slips.

There are 29 charming cottages and lofts that line the Boat Basin and offer a taste of seaside living in New England. Each cottage, which has its own private outdoor seating where you can enjoy a front row view of Nantucket Sound, comes complete with a fully stocked kitchen, separate living room with high definition flat screen TV and a provisioning service (upon request). The cottages are just one block away from a grocery store, which makes it convenient for longer stays. Cottage guests also have access to the White Elephant Spa.

This Memorial Day weekend is also going to be a busy one on the island with the annual Figawi competitive sailing regatta from Hyannis to Nantucket. For more than 40 years, it has been the premier sailboat race on the East Coast attracting more than 200 sailboats and was a favorite event for late Senator Ted Kennedy.
