Memorial Day honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice in wars defending our country and our freedom, so there is no better way for us to show our support, honor and respect for the nation’s fallen this Memorial Day weekend than by attending a few events in their memory.

Massachusetts Fallen Heroes is hosting its second annual Patriot Week (a 10-day series of events honoring the fallen, Gold Star families and families of local veterans) in honor of Memorial Day with a big kickoff this Saturday. At 4 p.m. at The Lawn on D, they will be hosting Patriot Fest featuring country music stars Tyler Farr and Eric Paslay.(The concert is a celebration of service on Armed Forces Day).

This Sunday, Boston’s Wounded Vet Motorcycle Run is hosting its seventh annual 25-mile motorcycle ride to honor five local veterans who sustained serious injuries while serving. This year’s honorees include SSG Brie Sullivan, SSG Kenny Butler, SSG Brandon Boyd, SGT Joshua Bouchard and CPL Paul Skarinka.

The seventh annual Memorial Dinner will be held next Tuesday where Gold Star families, veterans, and patriotic supporters are invited honor the fallen at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. The evening will honor Bob Rivers of Eastern Bank with Bill O’Reilly of Fox News serving as the dinner’s keynote speaker.

In support of Patriot Week 2017, participating Boston landmarks and buildings will also join Mass Fallen Heroes in supporting the fallen and Gold Star families by illuminating the exterior of their properties gold throughout Patriot Week.

1 Visit the Massachusetts Military Heroes Flag Garden

Next Wednesday, 37,000 flags will be placed at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument creating a beautiful garden of flags on Boston Common that will remain on display until sundown on Monday, May 30, Memorial Day. Each of the flags represents a brave Massachusetts service member who sacrificed his or her life defending our country since the Revolutionary War. The completed garden serves as the true meaning of Memorial Day and is designed to send a message of love and support to the families of these fallen heroes that their sacrifices will never be forgotten. A ceremony to honor Massachusetts service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan by reading their names will be held in front of the flag display on the Boston Common on Thursday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m.

2 Re-dedication of the Memorial & Reception of the Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial

Last year, Mass Fallen Heroes hosted the unveiling and dedication of the Massachusetts Iraq & Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston’s Seaport Common. Today, it serves as a public tribute to the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives since September 11, 2001. On Saturday, May 27, at 10 a.m., head over to the Seaport District to honor the Fallen at the Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial where they will host a re-dedication of the memorial. Gold Star family members, local politicians and Massachusetts Fallen Heroes staff and board members will be in attendance.

3 Run to Remember Boston

On Sunday, May 28, at 7 a.m., runners can participate in a Run to Remember to honor the first responders killed in the line of duty. You may choose to participate in either a 5K or half marathon through downtown Boston with a post-race celebration being held at “Honor Block” near the Mass Fallen Heroes Memorial at 105 Northern Avenue. (A post-race party will be held in G Lot located at 105 Northern Avenue).

4 71st Annual Memorial Day Services

Over near Fenway, the 71st annual Memorial Day services will be held on Saturday, May 28 at 11 a.mm at the Veterans Memorial Park in the Back Bay Fens. Veterans Memorial Park also hosts a special place of honor and memory near the Kelleher Rose Gardens for those who fought in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. On Monday, the United States Air Force F-16s will conduct a statewide flyover following the National Moment of Remembrance, that asks Americans to pause in an act of national unity for the duration of one minute beginning at 3 p.m.

5 Honor & Tribute: Memorial Day Concert

Finish off the Memorial Day weekend right by heading over on Monday night to the North End for the Honor & Tribute: Memorial Day Concert being held at 6:30 p.m. at Christopher Columbus Park. The event sponsored by the City of Boston Veterans' Services will feature the Metropolitan Wind Symphony Orchestra. The sunset commemoration concert is free and open to the public (bring your own blankets and chairs).
