Let’s just admit that we all have a sweet tooth every now and then. You can resist the urge to indulge in a calorie-laden confection once in a while, but when you make that decision to go for it, you want to be sure the indulgence is worth every bite. Here’s a look at five of the best bakeries in Boston that will satisfy your every sugary craving.

1 Flour

Flour Bakery
Chef/owner Joanne Chang made a sugary sweet name for herself when she opened her first Flour location in the South End, introducing Bostonians to her now famous homemade Oreos, sour cream coffee cake and buttery croissants. From lemon ginger scones, cinnamon cream brioche and sticky sticky buns to apple snacking spice cake with raisins and pecans; and banana bread chock full of fresh bananas and walnuts, Flour has grown in size, expanding to six additional locations, including their newest opening on Dalton Street. As you might expect, breakfast lines can be lengthy, but trust us, each confection is well worth waiting for.

2 Oakleaf Cakes Bake Shop

Oakleaf Cakes
Best known for their intricately detailed works of fine art displayed through their wedding cake creations, Oakleaf also offers a wide array of baked goods. Cappuccino cheesecake, confetti sugar cookies, rhubarb muffins, creamy brownie bliss trifle cups and triple berry jam poptarts are just a few standouts, not to mention custom 3D cakes that take the whimsical shape of animals, Disney characters and life-size creations of Star Wars characters (yes, they have done it all). They also offer cake decorating classes so you can perfect your own art at home.

3 Bova's Bakery

Whether you have an impuslive sweet tooth craving at 3 a.m. or 7 p.m., Bova's Bakery has got you covered. The North End bakery is open 24 hours a day (the only one in town) churning out every Italian specialty you can imagine. Think Italian breads, cookies, lobster tails (our favorite), eclairs, whoopie pies, chocolate chip ricotta cannoli, creamy tiramisu, flaky turnovers, fresh fruit tarts, and Neapolitans.

4 Finesse Pastries

Finesse Pastries
A French bakery in the North End? Say it is so! You won't believe your eyes when you step inside this French patisserie where macarons take on every flavor imaginable like caramel fleur de sel, vanilla bean, coconut lime and Earl Grey lavender. They also offer other sweet treat favorites like classic cheesecake, key lime pie and cream puffs filled with chantilly cream topped with chocolate ganache.

5 Eldo Cake House

Eldo Cake House
You might not expect to find a fantastic bakery in Chinatown, but if you look closely, you will discover Eldo Cake House. Tucked in a nondescript storefront, here you will find creamy egg tarts, Swiss rolls, coconut cocktail buns, pineapple cake and our favorite, fluffy egg white cake topped with mango.
