Being a coastal city right on the water, Boston restaurants are most certainly known for their fresh seafood dishes plucked just hours prior from the Atlantic. Whether you are in the mood for a traditional lobster bake or prefer to indulge in a more complex dish with a Mediterranean flair, here’s a look at five of the best seafood restaurants in Boston.

1 Ostra

Ostra
Chef/owner Jamie Mammano's upscale seafood restaurant with a modern flair for the Mediterranean in the Theater District churns out some of the city's best seafood dishes. Take, for example, their signature Sea Bream served wrapped in Trevisano Leaf along with extra virgin olive oil, lemon and fresh herbs. The well balanced flavors combined with the simplicity of the herbs make this a standout dish. We also love the ricotta gnocchetti with Maine lobster and shaved black truffle.

2 Row 34

Row 34
There isn't a better location for fresh seafood than the Seaport District where restaurants are just steps from the docks where fishermen transport their daily reeled-in catch of the day. Over at Row 34, the haute establishment is one of the best spots in town for their extensive oyster menu paired up with a good selection of local and national craft beers. Start off with the lettuce cups filled with crispy oysters and move onto a the roasted bluefish with sweet potato, bacon and cipollini onion or the grilled salmon made even better with arugula pesto. When summer rolls around, their lobster roll is a must - chock full of fresh lobster served creamy or buttery.

3 SELECT Oyster Bar

SELECT Oyster Bar
One of the latest and greatest newcomers to the oyster bar scene, SELECT is all about sipping on a glass of white while slurping down some briny bivalves. One of the city's biggest splurges comes in the form of The Great Republic, an enormous indulgence of your saltwater favorites - 12 oysters, eight shrimp cocktail, scallop ceviche, Peekytoe crab salad, dressed Maine lobster, smoked salmon, an ounce of Giaveri Sturgeon caviar and tuna tartare. Chef Michael Serpa's Back Bay townhouse location serves up heartier dishes including Casco Bay halibut, Icelandic Arctic char and a mixed fish Bouillabaisse.

4 Atlantic Fish Co.

Atlantic Fish Co.
When you hear a seafood restaurant is the sibling to Boston's steakhouse favorite, Abe & Louie's, you know it's going to be good. Atlantic Fish Co. in Back Bay knows how to please the seafood craved masses. From golden crab and corn spring rolls, crispy bacon wrapped scallops and a "super lump" crab cake chock full of fresh crabmeat to pan seared Atlantic cod, crab crusted haddock and sautéed swordfish picatta, the menu dances with flavors and portions. Summertime in New England is all about one-pot boiled dinners and Bostonians flock here for their enormous sampling. Not the Irish kind, more like the seafood version filled with corn on the cob, red potatoes and, of course, a multi-pound lobster to round it out.

5 The Oceanaire Seafood Room

The Oceanaire Seafood Room
Blackened fish tacos, overstuffed lobsters, charred octopus and king crab whipped potatoes are just some of the reasons we can't get enough of this haute spot. The gorgeous former US Trust Bank space now transformed into a haute seafood favorite serves up every kind of seafood imaginable. From southern favorites like shrimp and crawfish to chicken fried lobster to unique finds like king crab lasagna and wild Alaska halibut T-bone, we come here to try some delicious finds like serrano wrapped jumbo sea scallops and lobster, fresh Hawaii marlin topped with a key lime yuzu glaze or Spanish bluefin tuna crudo.
