Many San Franciscans work from home or have highly flexible schedules. This means that on any given day people are out and about in search of delicious breakfast food. If you are hungry for a memorable breakfast during the week, head to one of the following five places.

1 Jane

According to its website, Jane’s mission is to serve “top quality coffee, breakfast, and lunch.” Judging by its popularity, they are incredibly successful at accomplishing this mission! There are two Jane cafes—the original on Fillmore and a second on Larkin—and one bakery that provides the bread for the cafes. The menu changes with the season, but you can’t go wrong with the spicy baked eggs in tomato and black bean stew or avocado mash—it’s the most sensational avocado toast around. Note that breakfast is served all day long.

2 Arlequin Cafe

When it’s a warm day, the best place for an outdoor breakfast is the large back patio at Arlequin Cafe in Hayes Valley. Breakfast is served daily until 11:30 a.m. and there are plenty of ways to personalize your meal. Order eggs any way, a bagel-and-egg sandwich with either fried or scrambled eggs and the option to add a breakfast protein, or your favorite flavor of Bellwether Farms yogurt. There is also an excellent breakfast burrito with crispy pork confit and seasonal brioche doughnuts.

3 As Quoted

When As Quoted opened a little over a year ago on Sacramento Street, it quickly became the beloved spot of many ladies who lunch. The cafe’s slogan is SLOW which stands for seasonal, local, organic, and wholesome. It’s a beautiful all white space that is relatively quiet. On the menu? A variety of open-faced sandwiches—we love the BLT with Marin Sun Farms bacon, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and ranch dressing—muffin frittatas, roasted potatoes, and honey-bruleed grapefruit.

4 Boulettes Larder

For a working breakfast meeting, you can’t beat Boulettes Larder. It’s inside the Ferry Building and has outdoor seating that over looks the water and the Bay Bridge. What we love about Boulettes Larder is its European, no-holds-bar approach to breakfast cuisine. There is sheep’s milk yogurt, poached duck eggs, and it’s probably the only place in the city where you can enjoy imported truffled buratta for breakfast. Even the drinks are luxurious: Eastern European hot chocolate, freshly squeezed citrus juice, and a bloody Mary made with fresh tomato/kraut/pickle juice.

5 Outerlands

On weekends Outerlands, which is named for its Outer Sunset location, has a long line for breakfast. However, during the week, the destination eatery isn’t as crowded. What to order at the happening spot? The asparagus sandwich with sunny side up eggs, young manchego, onion jam, and almonds is a vegetarian breakfast revelation. If you’re a fan of Asian-inspired breakfast foods, you can find that here, too, in the form of warm mushroom broth with winter greens, brown rice, and egg. There is also a delicious daily seasonal doughnut offering.
