When it comes to excellent steakhouses, London has no shortage. Here are five of the best meat meccas in town.

1 CUT at 45 Park Lane

Steakhouse is the wrong term for this establishment on uber fancy Park Lane, steak chateau would be more accurate. Austrian-born Wolfgang Puck landed in London with CUT, his first restaurant in Europe, located in the Dorchester Collection’s Mayfair hotel. The opulent room is hung with a dozen or so Damien Hirst pieces and the lamp lit wood-paneled room has a distinct members club vibe. The steak is done so perfectly you barely require a sharp knife, and the accompaniments are divine. Puck’s Michelin roots are evident in the gorgeous presentation, setting the food apart on a whole new level.

2 Hawksmoor

The people at Hawksmoor pride themselves in knowing exactly where their meat comes from and will not serve anything other than free range and grass fed beef. The heavily paneled room and dark colours give the restaurant a secretive feeling, this is a place where deals are made. Personal menu highlight is the bone marrow, add fried onions to really elevate the flavour but if you’re looking to splash out, go for the chateaubriand. The restaurant, which has grown to six locations over the years, serves meat by weight and is share-friendly - although one look at the menu might make you forget that sharing is caring.

3 Goodman

Goodman restaurants occupy three top spots in this fabulous town; Mayfair, The City and Canary Wharf. They’re finicky about their food and they sure don’t make things easy on themselves, ageing their beef on site - all six tonnes of it. Steaks are cut upon request so your meat is literally tailored to your preference. If you’re a wine buff, you’ll be excited to know that they source their wine from over twenty suppliers and vineyards. The menu offers a 350g New York strip and a 400g ribeye which will blow your socks off. Haute tip: if you’re not watching your cholesterol levels order the Béarnaise sauce and chips fried in beef dripping.

4 Gaucho Picadilly

Gaucho is a name familiar to London food fans and is instantly associated with great steak, fabulous wine and good company. Flagship branch Gaucho Piccadilly, housed in the former Spanish Embassy, is firmly committed to the Argentinian style of cooking. The ambience is lively and appropriate for intimate date nights as well as comfortably hosting large groups. The vaulted wine cellars and intricately tiled private dining room offer up a sexy spot for all occasions. They’re big on style, with bold animal prints, swooping crystal chandeliers and textured walls. Roll up for their Electro Brunch for a mouth watering all-inclusive and unlimited menu of Gaucho’s take on brunch staples.

5 STK

STK glamorously blends a modern NYC steakhouse with a chic lounge. It’s the perfect pre-night out dinner and you don’t need to leave the premises once you’ve cleaned your plate. The steak itself ranges from Japanese Wagyu to Hereford Sirloin and quality is right at the top of the priority list. Try the mini burgers as a starter and elevate your sirloin with added shavings of black truffle. The smart dress code, DJ sets and loose attitude towards champagne set this apart from other steakhouses. Pencil STK in your diary the next time you’ve got steak on your mind and you’re looking to paint the town red.
