Brunch has very quickly become a weekend institution and is now one of the sole reasons we schlep out of bed the morning after a night of binge drinking. From eggs Benedict to bottomless booze, we’ve rounded up our top picks for the best spots in town.

1 Berner’s Tavern

The name may scream ‘pub’ however the reality is an elegant affair which will require you to look your best and keep your manners in check. Berner’s Tavern is located in the fashionable EDITION Hotel where no expense has been spared on the interior. The elaborate stucco ceilings and heavily adorned walls and furnishings compete at the top of luxury and style. The menu utilises luxury ingredients like fresh crab and lobster as well as the usual suspects like poached eggs and hollandaise. Every dish is perfectly turned out and impeccably balanced, just like the decor.

2 The Wolseley

Tell any self-respecting Londoner you brunched at The Wolseley and wait for their nod of approval. This upmarket old school restaurant offers up some of the best dishes in town. Keeping things very British and colonial you can order a series of dishes inspired by Viennese, British and French cuisine. Go for the kedgeree for a taste of breakfast in India, a delicious combination of smoked haddock, rice and eggs, or opt for a caviar omelette if you’re after a different kind of exotic. Haute tip: presentation, quality, taste - breakfast here is more of an event than any dinner, so skip your meal the night before and arrive with a big appetite.

3 Chiltern Firehouse

Chiltern Firehouse is the place to be, which means getting a good table is mission impossible. Even waiting patiently may only get you as far as a seat at the bar but with so many celebrities in attendance nobody complains. Nuno Mendes is the chef behind the scenes at this converted Victorian fire station and his Portuguese background takes a backseat with more traditional offerings for brunch. The food is as envy-inducing as the clientele and the garden makes a super social setting. Stacks of fluffy pancakes and luxurious lobster and crab omelettes will make you glad you went to the effort of brunching at this exclusive joint.

4 Granger & Co

If you’re not much of a morning person we still advise you to make the effort for this one. Aussie chef Bill Granger landed in London and brought the fresh, healthy and delicious Oz diet with him. Incorporating superfoods and nutrient dense ingredients into every dish, you’ll finally understand the fuss about overly hashtagged buzzwords like ‘kale’ and ‘acai’. If you’re not entirely sold on the obscure fruit and vegetable revolution, go for the ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter which will genuinely bring tears to your eyes. Queuing is usually a destination hazard but what’s a little waiting time when you’re about to reach food fulfillment?

5 Dirty Bones Shoreditch

Located in the heart of edgy Shoreditch, Dirty Bones is the epitome of New York-style comfort food. Inside you’re warmly welcomed by low slung velvet chairs and music loud enough to hear your companions but not be overheard by strangers. The brunch menu is so full of delicious options you’re almost certainly going to over order - so go hungry. The crumpets and poached eggs with avocado were the perfect balance of garlicky and fresh, and the almond and matcha encrusted french toast was both earthy and sweet. Make it a party by adding £19 and get four cocktails with your meal. Is hair of the dog real?
