There is nothing like that first cup of coffee in the morning to get you going. We all know Bostonians run on Dunkins, but when we are looking for a strong cup of joe in the form of a dark espresso or creamy capuccino, we prefer a local coffee house. To either kick off the morning right or for that perfect afternoon pick-me-up, we have rounded up five of the best coffee shops in Boston.

1 Boston Common Coffee Co.

Boston Common Coffee Company
With locations in Downtown Crossing, the Financial District and bordering the North End, Boston Common Coffee Company has got your need for a caffeine fix covered all around town. Specialty brews come from Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico and El Salvador. They even have their own light roast blend made from Indonesian and Central American coffees and a selection of flavored javas like scrumptious cinnamon nut, gingerbread and sea salt caramel mocha.

The espresso based coffee served up at this Financial District location (and five other locations throughout the city) is named after the loose Australian translation of their term for an Americano. 3 George Howell Coffee

George Howell
The artisan small batch roasted coffee and espresso bar offers single farm sourced limited roast coffees from places like Rwanda, Yemen and El Salvador. Choose your favorite by roast profile (from a lighter northern Italian blend to a darker French roast) or flavor note (think floral, citrus, nuts, chocolate and jammy). This coffee house recently opened inside The Godfrey Hotel in Downtown Crossing. There is a second cafe at the Boston Public Market.

4 Cuppa Coffee

Cuppa Coffee
There aren't many places in Boston where you can get a taste of Australia, but at Cuppa Coffee, they celebrate some of the strongest espresso-based coffees in town. The espresso bar at this Back Bay location uses New England based Red Barn Roasters for their creamy capuccinos, long macchiatos, and cafe lattes. Pair it up with a traditional Australian meat pie filled with beef and cheese, chicken and vegetables or sausage. There are two other locations in town, including one in the South End below the Troy Apartment Complex and in the West End.

5 Gracenote Coffee

Gracenote Coffee
This Leather District coffee shop offers two espressos to choose from each day, including Alpha, Gracenote's version of a classic espresso and a daily rotating single origin. The espressos here are prepared with Mahlkoenig Peak grinders and a sleek Modbar espresso machine while the single rotating coffee is brewed on a Marco Jet for consistent, fast, and delicious drip coffee. Pair it up with some sweets from Forge Bakery and Townsman Boston for the perfect morning starter.
