On Wednesday night entrepreneurs, emerging art aficionados, European gallerists, and SF socials gathered at Fort Mason for the fourth annual Fog Design + Art Opening Gala. The event, which benefited SFMOMA, was put on by the steering committee, a group of seven local luminaries including Stanlee Gatti, Allison Speer, Douglas Duncan, Susan Swig, Roth Martin, Katie Paige, and Cathy Topham. Unlike some San Francisco events which can be stuffy, this scene was vibrant, the crowd jovial, and the atmosphere electric. 45 galleries and design firms have put together beautiful booths filled with artwork, furniture, light fixtures, and installations. Think a Moroccan-inspired teal and silver rug, a wall mirror that shifts its shape from a classic oval to a series of grids and chards, abstract colorful paintings, and cool photographs of the Apollo moon missions. The entryway exhibit, designed by event planner Stanlee Gatti was a fragrant wall of roses. Like thick curtains hanging from the ceiling, red, pink, fuchsia, and yellow roses formed a beautiful design. A heart with the name Cathy inside paid tribute to Topham.

While A16 and Jane cafe are catering this weekend’s festivities, McCall’s served up the fare at the main event. When it comes to catering for a crowd, you can’t quite beat McCall’s: stations were set up throughout Fort Mason, overflowing with plump dumplings, crispy samosas, melt-in-your-mouth beef tenderloin, buttery fingerling potatoes, and perfectly cooked rack of lamb. Pillowy raviolis filled with ricotta were topped with a delectable white lemon cream sauce. However, the highlight was the fried chicken stations complete with mashed potatoes, biscuits, gravy and housemade hot sauce. Another highlight? The dessert. Young men in white doctor’s cloaks scooped out cones of salted caramel gelato and passed out miniature donuts covered in sugary pink raspberry frosting and rainbow sprinkles. The wine and campari cocktails by Rye on the Road flowed freely, one cheekily named after Karl the Fog.

Katie Traina browsed for jewelry at the lux Parisian jeweler, Lorenz Bäumer. Yves Behar searched for his partner in crime, the petit Sabrina Buell while chatting on the phone. Tyler Florence hobnobbed with art collectors near the dims, while Vanessa Getty, in a glittering crop crop top and A-line skirt chatted with her equally stylish and perfectly coiffed blonde buddies. Conversations were lively and entertaining. Overheard: ‘we both worked at Christy’s together 10 years ago!’ ‘But we never talked to each other because I worked on 19th century and she was on the modern impressionists.’ Salon 94, Patrick Parrish, and Haines Gallery were some of the most popular booths. Despite the end of the night deluge, the event was a rollicking and roaring success.
