The proud fam watched on at Warner Bros. studios in Burbank on Saturday as Jaden challenged the audience to take action. “It’s time to be proactive, because there is hope. This isn’t the first time in history that humankind has faced grave challenges into the next chapters of responsibility and collaboration,” said Smith as he accepted his award. “This is dedicated to those who are driven, committed, creative and hopeful for a bright and resilient future,” he said.

Others honored during the environmental awards included Shailene Woodley with the Female EMA Futures Award. The Divergent star, who has strongly and publicly opposed the Dakota Access Pipeline, gave a heartfelt acceptance speech that resulted in a standing ovation. “Thousands of people are committed to fighting and winning a battle against corporate greed with nothing but love and compassion. Live a more compassionate life because the ripple effect of that is what is going to save our oceans, our planet, and our race,” she noted.

Fellow honoree Moby brought the house down as he gave a surprise live musical performance accompanying his speech on animal agriculture. “One thing that we collectively as a nation and species could do to really address environmental concerns is stop supporting animal agriculture. We can address environmental issues just by stop subsidizing animal agriculture.”

Host Nicole Richie led the evening preaching about being environmentally conscious with some light political banter. “Are we all ready to make America green again? I am calling for a total and complete ban on climate change deniers. Nobody loves the environment more than Richie does. I was one of the first Young Hollywood board members. Before me, no one drove a Prius, no one took their bags to the market. In fact, I’m pretty sure I invented the concept of smoking weed out of a pen. That’s why nobody has a better relationship with the greens than I do.”
