Stuck for ideas this Labor Day? Check out five amazing ideas for a California-based holiday!

1 The Bay Area: Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay

Mark Twain famously said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." Well, Twain probably hadn't taken a trip to Half Moon Bay, where temperatures plummet so rapidly you might think you were in a different country. That said, sometimes you need a little respite from the heat, especially in Southern California, and the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay is a perfect place to snuggle up in front of your own personal firepit and enjoy the cool weather. There's golf, gourmet restaurants and a spectacular spa. It's the perfect high-end spot to get cozy with your respective other for a romantic weekend away...and in close proximity to sultry San Jose if you fancy a spot of warmth.

2 Catalina: Hotel Metropole

Catalina is a hop, skip, jump and ferry ride away from L.A., so sail out on the high seas from Long Beach or San Pedro and dock yourself for the weekend at Hotel Metropole. Book The Beach House: a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom 1800 square foot hideaway with a full kitchen, an entertainment deck with panoramic ocean views, fireplace, huge living room with large screen TV, DVD and CD players -- even a built-in library. The master suite features a vaulted ceiling, king-size bed, Frette linens and robes, sofa, dressing area, TV and private deck. The master bath has a Jacuzzi bathtub and a huge walk-in shower. The guest suite provides two full-size beds, guest bath with Jacuzzi bathtub, TV, and a private deck. It's a great home away from home in paradise.

3 San Diego: Hotel Del Coronado

We can't gush enough about the iconic Hotel Del Coronado, a one-time playground of the rich and famous. Coronado Beach was named one of the best in America for a reason, making this a great Labor Day getaway (or anytime getaway, really) for couples, pals or families. Grab your towel, a good book and SPF and camp out on the beach for the weekend. Luxury lovers will want to book the neighboring upscale Beach Village at The Del, though those who love a good historical stay (and a haunted one) will want to stay in the main building.

4 Santa Barbara: Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore

Imagine waking up, strolling through a leafy, green, sun-dappled paradise and catching the sunrise from a stunning, empty stretch of beach...all within two minutes. That's your stay at the gorgeous, completely opulent Biltmore Santa Barbara, a Four Seasons property. You can be as private or as chatty as you want here, and you'll be doing either in style. Best of all, Santa Barbara is only a two-hour drive from L.A. That's what we calling winning!

5 Orange County: The Montage Laguna Beach

The Montage Laguna Beach is one of our favorite hotels in California for a reason: it's paradise personified. The spa is incredible and Studio, its signature restaurant, is easily one of the most special meals you'll likely have in America. Plus, every Angeleno knows how wonderful our SoCal sunsets are. Well, take your favorite sunset and multiply it by 10, add dolphins in the background, and you've got what your experience will be at The Montage. To give this haute hotel a stamp of approval or two thumbs up is being trite, but we'll give both anyway.
