Bulgari knows a thing or two about divas. After all, the iconic Roman jeweler has had its share of superstar clients (Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Ingrid Bergman to name a few) who were used to getting what they wanted, when they wanted it.
And a lot of time what they wanted was something from Bulgari. Taylor, for example, was a particularly devoted client. As she recounted in her book My Love Affair with Jewelry, “Undeniably, one of the biggest advantages to working on Cleopatra in Rome was Bulgari’s nice little shop. I used to visit Gianni Bulgari in the afternoons, and we’d sit in what he called the money room and swap stories.” (When she and Richard Burton were in the throes of their headline-grabbing love affair during the filming of Cleopatra, they used the Bulgari store as a hideout from Rome’s relentless paparazzi. Burton once remarked that “the only word Liz knows in Italian is ‘Bulgari.’ ”)
So when the jeweler recently launched its new Divas’ Dream collection, the name seemed particularly apt, an homage of sorts to its megawatt clients or to any woman with a determined, uncompromising sense of style. (Bulgari customers have included plenty of men, too—high-profile divos like movie directors Carlo Ponti, Vittorio de Sica and Roberto Rossellini.)
The knockout necklace pictured here, part of the collection’s haute joaillerie line, is an exquisite blend of tourmalines, rubelites, peridots and pavé diamonds. Bulgari’s leadership in sourcing the finest stones and the flawless craftsmanship of its settings are a few of the reasons the jeweler has endured as a favorite among the international diva set from the dolce vita ’60s to the present. When crafting many of its pieces, Bulgari never forgets its heritage, incorporating iconic Roman symbols or references in the designs. Here, the necklace’s pastel palette takes its cue from the color of marble in the city’s Baths of Caracalla, once the preferred spa, if you will, of the divas of ancient Rome.
