Haute Spots Boston: Barlow’s Restaurant

Even though we have lived in Boston all of our lives and thought we knew about every restaurant in town, we recently discovered a hidden gem known as Barlow’s Restaurant tucked away between South Boston and the Fort Point Channel. I may be doing a disservice to those in the know by alerting others to this neighborhood restaurant, but for those who have not yet discovered Barlow’s, you are in for a special treat. If you visit Thursday through Saturday evenings, they offer live entertainment in the main dining room, daily specials featuring slow roasted prime rib and a weekend brunch and bloody Mary bar.

We recently visited on a Friday night and were quickly greeted by our friendly server, who showed us to a seat on the patio tucked away in this beautiful neighborhood. She got us started with a local Boston beer (Castle Island Candlepin) and Maine microbrew (Baxter Stowaway IPA) that were perfect for an early summer’s night. We recommend pairing them up with a sampling of chicken dumplings accompanied by a side of sesame-ginger slaw and hoisin dipping sauce (or the burrata bruschetta with baby heirloom tomatoes, balsamic glazed and grilled crostini) to share. Their standout dish here is the smoked haddock and shellfish chowder. There is so much seafood swimming in this creamy chowder filled with clams, mussels, corn and potatoes you could almost eat it with a fork.

When it comes to entrees, the must-have dish here is the ramen bowl, a gargantuan (consider yourself warned) pot chock full of shrimp, chicken, carrots, broccoli, peppers, onions, grilled scallions and a soft boiled egg in a spicy Sriracha broth. We also loved the Carolina gold beef brined turkey tips served with a side of potato salad, cucumber salad and corn bread.

Other entrees here include seared salmon scampi, steak tips with fingerling potatoes and boneless fried chicken breast with bacon gravy and mashed potatoes. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Barlow’s Restaurant is located at 241 A Street in Boston.
