It’s hard to imagine a better vantage point to savor the many splendors of Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley than Gary Farrell Winery. Located on a hillside with panoramic views of the forested valley below, the winery’s tasting experiences are some of the hautest in the industry. From your terrace perch, enjoy a plate of local gourmet cheeses selected expressly to complement each tasting as your wine educator explains the origins of each pour. Gary Farrell Winery is known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, each epitomizing the passion of winemaking icon Gary Farrell, and each an elegant and complex expression of their Russian River Valley vineyard origins – one of the world’s greatest and most distinctive winegrowing regions.

Today, Gary Farrell Winery and its legacy are in the capable hands of the fine wine investment company The Vincraft Group. This dream team of industry executives (Pete Scott, former CFO of Beringer Wine Estates; Walt Klenz; former president and CEO of Beringer Wine Estates; and Bill Price, owner of Sonoma Valley’s famed Durell Vineyard and a partner in Kistler Vineyards) is preserving Gary Farrell’s legacy while striving to push quality to an even higher level. Add to the mix Theresa Heredia, the respected winemaker who joined Gary Farrell Winery in 2012, She has long specialized in small-lot, single-vineyard wines and is experimenting with new techniques to further elevate the wine’s quality. See and taste for yourself why Gary Farrell Winery is producing some of the best wines in California. Here’s further motivation:

1 Great Wines Come From Great Vineyards

Developing fruitful, long-term partnerships with the owners of the area’s finest vineyards has assured Gary Farrell Winery access to the highest quality raw materials, making its name synonymous with the finest the Russian River Valley AVA has to offer. Vineyard partners include Rochioli, Allen, Bacigalupi and Hallberg vineyards - each providing older heritage clones as well as a diverse array of French Dijon clones.

2 Renowned Pinot Noir

Gift a bottle of Gary Farrell Pinot Noir to your next dinner party host, and you’ll be forever known as the perfect guest. These coveted luscious reds embody the variety’s broad ripeness spectrum, displaying bright red fruit aromas, vibrant black cherry and berry flavors, and seductive sandalwood and Asian spice tones.

3 Renowned Chardonnay

Gary Farrell’s swoon-worthy Chardonnays are lush with full-bodied, citrus and tropical fruit tones. It’s not necessary that you know they are fermented 100 percent in French oak barrels and 500L puncheons (which facilitates the integration of oak aromas and flavors by providing a larger juice or wine to oak ratio), but having this knowledge might make for good dinner table conversation.

4 Reaching for the Stars

Over the years Gary Farrell Winery wines have garnered innumerable awards and accolades for their balance, elegance and purity of varietal expression, but the winery’s new owners and winemaker are not satisfied with the status quo. They continue to seek additional elite grape sources within the Russian River Valley to elevate wine quality even further.

5 Three-in-One

Why limit yourself to one quality winery when you can experience three? Gary Farrell Winery has partnered with DaVero Farms & Winery and Lancaster Estate to offer the “Sonoma County Three Valley Adventure,” an in-depth tour of the Russian River, Dry Creek and Alexander valleys. Start at Gary Farrell Winery with a tasting of six single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot noirs in their private tasting salon overlooking the Russian River Valley. Move up the road to Dry Creek Valley and the DaVero estate for a tasting of their single-vineyard wines and estate olive oils along with a seasonal lunch. From there, venture just over the hill to the Alexander Valley, where your tour ends at Lancaster Estate’s wine cave for an educational tasting. ($175 per person; call any of the three participating wineries for reservations: Gary Farrell Winery, 707-473-2909; DaVero Farms and Winery 707-431-8000 ext. 1; Lancaster Estate, 707-473-3910).
