Each year top interior designers transform a Manhattan home (for 2016 The Carlton House Townhouse at 19 East 61st Street ) into a design extravaganza highlighting the latest trends in decor, art, and home technology for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club.The showhouse, now in its 44th year, raises funds for the club’s after-school and enrichment programs that benefit in-need New York City children. Over the course of four decades this springtime event has become a must-see for thousands of design enthusiasts. It also serves as an influential design laboratory which sparks new trends in home decor throughout the world.
Here is Haute Living New York‘s first look at highlights from the show–the glamorous, centuries-spanning living/dining room designed by Alex Papachristidis, whose work has been featured for years in major glossies from Architectural Digest to In Style. His name routinely shows up in “best of the best” features”: the 2016 AD100 List, Elle Décor’s A-List of 25 Interior Designers, and NY Spaces Top 50 Designers List.
Papachristidis is masterful when blending periods and styles—a skill he attributes to having traveled extensively throughout his life. For this Kips Bay room, antiques and modern elements mix seamlessly into one gorgeous living-dining space. When asked about the setting Papachristidis says, “ I think it is modern for a room to have more than one purpose. In a house this size it is often hard to get everybody together, that’s why it was designed as a place for the family to meet, mingle with guests, and sit down to dinner. The space is accented with custom artisanal pieces, 18th century antique furniture and Roman Antiquities. The custom hand-painted wallpaper by Gracie provides a richly patterned backdrop for entertaining.
