Since Cinco de Mayo falls on a Thursday this year, there is no reason not to go out and celebrate. After May 5th, you can keep the tequila party going at the Boston Harbor Hotel where the Rowes Wharf Bar will be hosting a three-course Don Julio Tequila Dinner on May 11. In the meantime, here’s a look at five haute spots to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Boston.
1 Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar
One of the hautest newcomers to South Boston is also one of the coolest. Located right on Broadway in the heart of Southie stands Loco Taqueria. As crazy as it sounds, this might be one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. Now through May 5, Executive Chef Matt Drummond and mixologist Will Falaro will be offering dinner and cocktail specials each night that include mole braised chicken tacos paired with tequila smash.
412 West Broadway South Boston, MA 02127
2 Besito Mexican
In celebration of the festive holiday, Besito will be serving two specialty dishes - Queso Fundido con Langosta (made with Maine lobster, tinga rajas, queso Chihuahua and cilantro) and Pescado en Salsa Verde (pan-roasted halibut served with grilled queso asado, roasted potato gratin, avocado and salsa verde) - in addition to the regular menu. Pair it up with the El Pepino Margarita, made with Avian Blanco tequila, cucumber, jalapeno, Cointreau, agave nectar and fresh squeezed lime.
199 Boylston Street Chestnut Hill, MA 02467
3 Casa Romero
Back Bay will be celebrating in Mexican style this Cinco de Mayo. Casa Romero offers an authentic taste of Mexico with dishes like Cochinita Pibil (roasted marinated pork marinated with corn tortillas) and Calamares Rellenos al Chipotle (sauteed stuffed squid served in a tomato and chipotle sauce). It all goes even better with a spice-infused cocktail (jalapeno, please).
30 Gloucester Street Boston, MA 02128
4 El Centro
Kick off the celebrations right with sangria in hand and chips, salsa and guacamole in the other. Try the steak enchiladas con salsa verde, which are addictingly good or the cheesy pork quesadilla or the street corn topped with ricotta or the chicken tacos or the beef empanadas, or the...just go see for yourself how good this place is.
5 Rosa Mexicano
Over in the Seaport District, Rosa Mexicano is offering a specialty three-course menu for the table. Start off with a sampling of spiced up guacamole made with cilantro then move onto slow braised pork carnitas served in a cast iron skillet with corn tortillas or a dish of grilled salmon with poblano cream sauce. Be sure to save some room for the churros (Mexican donuts) served with a side of chocolate and caramel, which is well worth every calorie.
