With the warmer weather upon us, it’s time to start planning those long-awaited weekend getaways. One of our favorite spots is Castle Hill Inn located a short drive south of Boston in the quintessential New England haute spot of Newport, Rhode Island. This gorgeous 19th century coastal mansion offers seven cozy guest rooms and suites in the Agassiz Mansion along with 26 private waterfront accommodations in the Harbor Houses, Chalet, Beach Houses and Beach Cottages.

This summer, the property is hosting an array of activities, including everything from stargazing, clambakes and bonfires to games on the lawn, yoga and sailing. You can even sign up for a hands-on cooking experience with Executive Chef Lou Rossi or catch a ride on Castle Hill Inn’s water taxi, M/V Mistress that will whisk you from the property’s marina directly to Newport Harbor. (Service is offered daily from June 17 to September 5, and weekends in May, early June and September).

We recently stayed in one of the gorgeous beachfront cottages for an early spring getaway. Whether you come for a night to relax or are looking to spend a week away from it all, these cottages offer the perfect escape. Each seaside cottage, which is located just 250 yards from the main mansion, was built on the property’s private beach offering a front row oceanfront view. Inside, the queen-bedroom cottage, our unit was outfitted with a wet bar with sink, small refrigerator, espresso maker and microwave. There is a separate living area with flat screen television and gas fireplace.

In the morning, we enjoyed sitting on our private deck to enjoy a cup of morning coffee while taking in the oceanfront view before heading back to the mansion for breakfast. The Relais & Chateaux property sits on a 40-acre peninsula overlooking Narragansett Bay, the perfect setting for a weekend getaway.

If you are looking to escape the property for a few hours, book a private yacht on a custom-designed Hinckley, or a hot air balloon ride aboard Newport by Air or ask the concierge to assist with a visit to a nearby vineyard or New England farm.
