When spring officially arrives later on this week, you know it’s time to start thinking about where to go for the best al fresco dining in Boston. Many restaurants have already opened their patios to diners looking to enjoy the great outdoors and the rest will be unveiling their outdoor seating in the coming weeks. Here is a look at five of the best patio scenes you have to check out this spring in Boston.

1 Gather

The Seaport District is admittedly the hautest scene in town, especially when it comes to outdoor dining. Everyone loves to be near the water and Gather delivers with a patio located in the innovative area of District Hall. Here, you can enjoy an overstuffed lobster roll, seared tuna with rainbow chard or marinated steak frites while enjoying a nearby view of Boston Harbor.

2 Aragosta Bar and Bistro

The North End is best known for its world class Italian fare and Aragosta Bar + Bistro delivers in that regard. The waterfront location is an added bonus where you can dine on charcuterie, grilled flatbreads, hand cut potato gnocchi and their infamous rigatoni Bolognese (made with veal cheek and oxtail ragu) on the open air terrace overlooking Boston Harbor.

3 ArtBar Cambridge

One of the best patios to see and be seen is located right along the Charles River in Cambridge. If you haven't been yet, meet ArtBar located inside the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge. Dinners take on a creative life here with dishes artfully prepared (think scallops with cauliflower purée, asparagus and savory granola).

4 75 on Liberty Wharf

If you are looking for a waterfront seat that is the next best thing to being on the water, head over to the cozy patio at 75 on Liberty Wharf. Express lunches are offered for VIPs, who come here for a salmon BLT, BBQ sirloin steak sandwich or a Tuscan chicken panini. They also offer a fantastic weekend brunch complete with raspberry stuffed French toast, eggs Benedict and Nantucket seafood stew.

5 The Hungry I

It doesn't get much more romantic any time of year than The Hungry I located in Beacon Hill, but the patio scene heats up during the warmer months. The vine-covered terrace offers a cozy atmosphere for a relaxing dinner (or perhaps a marriage proposal?) where you can dine on French fare like venison au poivre, sea bass Vera Cruz or breast of duck L'orange.
