David Gandy is a hot (and haute) commodity. The English model—who turns 36 in February—is not only handsome, but he’s also philanthropic. In addition to supporting charities like Oxfam, he launched the “Blue Steel Appeal” in 2013—a charity foundation that he created to raise money for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day. Here, the star of Dolce&Gabbana’s Light Blue campaign chats with Haute Living about style, scent and how he manages to look so dang good.
ON STYLE
What are your must-haves items, from accessories and clothing to luggage and high-tech gear?
Henry Poole & Co on Saville Row is my first stop for clothing, and Thom Sweeney is a must for made-to-measure tailored suits. Drakes is the best shop and brand for men’s accessories. I would also say a pair of shoes is one of my favorite wardrobe items: they can make or break an outfit. My favorite pair of boots is from David Preston. I also think that a man’s outfit isn’t complete without a watch. I collect watches, and have everything from vintage Omegas to modern Chopards. I do like to travel in style, too. My favorite luggage is Globetrotter, and men’s travel bags by Aspinal or Dunhill cannot be beaten.
What are a few current trends you love?
I don’t really follow trends. I think every person should figure out what works for them and go from there. Tailored suits are timeless and everyone knows I am a big fan of them. I think a lot of men underestimate the importance of using a tailor. It might take more time and effort, but there’s just no point spending loads of money on clothes if they don’t fit properly.
ON GROOMING
What are a few of your favorite products?
I keep my routine quite simple. Wherever I am, I make sure to have a good moisturizer, some rose oil as well and of course cologne—in the summer it has to be Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue.
What’s your routine for a night out?
When I am going to a red carpet event, I am fortunate enough to work with Larry King, who is a very talented hairdresser. I dress myself, picking one of my British-made tailored suits: I own between 80 and 90 now.
What is your style when you’re off-duty?
I look to bygone eras for inspiration, as I like that “English gentleman” look. Structured trousers paired with a blazer and a pair of smart leather brogue [shoes] is a great off-duty look, though.
What are your tried and true grooming tips?
I don’t spend too much time on grooming. My grooming routine takes about 20 minutes! However, I would always recommend finding a fragrance that suits you, as a scent can leave a lasting impression.
