Las Vegas is known for its many fine dining restaurants on The Strip, but a recent trend has seen some of the top chefs incorporate more comfort foods onto their menus. After successful launches in Los Angeles and Denver, Tom’s Urban restaurant recently opened up its first Las Vegas location inside the renovated New York-New York Hotel & Casino in November. Fusing gourmet and comfort food dishes with some exciting takes on classic cocktails, this is a great new dining option to gather with friends, have a power lunch or enjoy with a date.

Tom’s Urban is named after its founder, Tom Ryan, whom Gourmet Magazine has called one of the “Top 25 food entrepreneurs of the last quarter century.” In 2012, Ryan came up with the Tom’s Urban concept with his restaurant partner, Rick Schaden after the two had spent extensive time traveling to the top foodie cities in the country to better understand all the unique urban cultures and cuisine. From these extensive travels, Ryan has recreated and re-imagined his favorite dishes to bring them to you like you’ve never experienced before. The modern decor of Tom’s Urban is sleek and stylish, yet feels very inviting. A wide open seating concept allows you to not feel like you’re dining right next to someone and there is also a spacious patio area, which provides an excellent view of The Strip.

The menu features plenty of familiar favorites with a twist. For starters, you absolutely must try Tom’s signature Crispy Brussels Sprouts. You wouldn’t think Brussels Sprouts would be a signature dish, but like many things at Tom’s Urban, you must always expect the unexpected. These come served with roasted red peppers and a flavorful Asian vinaigrette, for a highly memorable dish. These are not the Brussels Sprouts that you grew up with that’s for sure.  Sharing small plates is encouraged here, so we highly recommend the Double Dip Hummus, Colorado Calamari and the “WOK” Charred Spicy Edame. Tom’s Urban also has an exceptional selection of sliders to choose from, including Filet Mignon, Prime Rib and Truffle Cracked Lobster. In fact, lobster is something that Tom’s Urban specializes in. The Truffled Maine Lobster Roll has already become a big fan-favorite from the “Road Trip” Sandwiches selection and comes with truffled mayo, wild arugula your choice of french fries (we recommend pairing with the sweet potatoes) and served on a decadent, butter-toasted brioche roll. Even if you’re from Maine, you will absolutely love the freshness of this enormous “sandwich.” If you’re really looking to go all out, try the Lobster + Shrimp Mac & Cheese. Among the decadent entrees to indulge in, you can’t go wrong with Tom’s signature “Big & Sticky” Rib Rack, which are authentic St. Louis ribs that come hardwood smoked to perfection. We also love the Big Ass Egg Roll and XL Pickle Brined Crispy Chicken, but our favorite is the Big Rick’s Mahi Mahi, which is a generous portion of fresh mahi mahi that is hand dusted in cornmeal and then pan seared with tomato slaw before being topped off with ripe avocados, cilantro crema, chipotle aioli and pico de gallo. This dish is light and flavorful, making for an excellent option while dining on the outdoor patio. Pair your entree with one of Tom’s refreshing takes on classic cocktails like the Absolute Mule Kick, Backyard Lemonade, Cactus Ass Kick or take your Sin City meal to the next level with the rich, Bacon Bourbon Mary.

You absolutely must save room for dessert as Tom’s Urban has the signature Urban Pop Tarts, which are a giant, homemade version of the childhood breakfast staple. These more closely resemble a Toaster Strudel with their flaky crust and rich frosting on top. The Pineapple Upside Down Cake is also a great option here, as the rich buttery cake is covered in caramelized brown sugar, pineapple and mango sauce. No matter which option you decide on, you’ll surely end your dining experience on a sugar high.

We all love comfort food and now there is a dedicated place in Sin City where you can satisfy your cravings with a gourmet twist. Stop into Tom’s Urban to discover why this will be your new favorite place to meet, eat and grab a drink on the Las Vegas Strip.
