When it comes to finding the best cocktails in Las Vegas, the Strip isn’t always the first place you should be looking. One of the city’s most popular bars among locals is the Velveteen Rabbit, which is located in Downtown Las Vegas in the heart of the revitalized Arts District.

Las Vegas natives, and sisters, Pamela and Christina Dylag opened the Velveteen Rabbit in 2013 after spending the better part of two years carefully crafting the menu. Their aim was to incorporate elements from the nightlife scenes they enjoyed experiencing from their extensive world travels. The Velveteen Rabbit’s décor would be right at home in Downtown Los Angeles or in the East Village of New York City. Think lots of low lighting and some cozy booths to hang in. The expert bartenders on staff would never refer to themselves as “mixologists,” but their signature libations certainly stand out from the pack and they only use the freshest ingredients. Take for example their Shroomin’ cocktail, which features butter-washed brandy, dry vermouth, thyme syrup, shiitake mushroom tincture and topped with lemon oil and a lime leaf. Then there’s the Spaghetti Western, which mixes gin, caprese shrub, Campari, fresh lemon juice, allspice dram, mozzarella foam and a splash of balsamic. These are practically meals and definitely not your typical Sin City cocktails. The popular Jamestown Cider combines apple-infused vodka with green tea honey, lemon and a dash of cinnamon to create a light, yet flavorful drink that’s perfect for fall. Every single signature cocktail on the Velveteen Rabbit’s menu, which is seasonally, is considerably cheaper than what you’d find at high-end cocktail bar on the Strip. You’ll also be hard pressed to find a more knowledge or friendly bar staff in Sin City.

On the weekends it can get pretty full, but there is more than enough space so that you’ll never feel claustrophobic. There is a small dance floor, but this is primarily the kind of place you want to go to grab a drink to catch up with friends or bring a date. However, there is live music and special themed DJ nights most weekends. One of the most popular events occurs on the first Friday of every month when the Velveteen Rabbit plays host to, The Get Back, on their spacious outdoor patio. Some of the city’s best DJs play vintage funk records all night long, and there’s always a special bar with some sweet drink deals.

When you’re looking to get down to some sinfully good grooves and sip on some of the best drinks Las Vegas has to offer, take a trip to the Arts District and enjoy the enlivening spirits at the Velveteen Rabbit.
