School has been in session for over six weeks, temperatures in Dallas have become bearable, and the State Fair is going strong. Autumn is here, winter is coming, and that romantic cruise you took in July is nothing more than a faded tan. It’s a great time to surprise the love of your life with a weekend in the country, fisherman knit sweaters, plaid scarves, and riding boots optional.
Granted, Jefferson is a two-and-a-half hour drive east that almost puts you in Louisiana but it’s an easy drive with light traffic and some pretty scenery. At the end of the trip you’ll find yourself in the Texas equivalent of a quaint country town with plenty of white picket fences, B&Bs, and antique stores. An added bonus this time of year is the vibrant autumn display of colors, probably some of the best in the entire state. Clean, fresh air, life at a much more relaxed pace, and some really excellent food will make you forget Central Expressway at 5:15 PM — at least for a couple of days.
There are plenty of hotels in the area but we recommend one of the many bed and breakfasts. There’s just something more relaxing, more personal, and more romantic about booking a room in a historic home or cabin. we based our picks on decor, ambiance, and level of romance. With so many to choose from we had a tough time limiting it to two.
House of the Seasons

We couldn’t pass up House of the Seasons, a 1872 Transitional Greek Revival home with all of the fascinating architecture, gorgeous (some original) art and antiques, and the stained glass everything. The house gets its name from the different colored stained glass in the cupola which creates the illusion of the seasons of the year. While we can’t tell you exactly what you’ll be served for breakfast we can tell you that it will be creative and absolutely delicious.

Benefield House is an 1895 Queen Anne home authentically decorated in lavish Victorian style. The grounds are spacious and just right for strolling. There is an all day refreshment bar, the food is seriously worth the gym time it requires – bananas flambe pancakes anyone? The bedrooms are large and romantic — just right for whatever you might have in mind. What made this B&B irresistible to us was the quick walk into the downtown area and the cozy-cottagey look that just welcomes you in.
There are plenty of fabulous places to eat and lots of sightseeing and shopping available, too. Wine tastings, music, and long walks in the East Texas woods make Jefferson one of our favorite spots to wind down. Maybe we’ll see you there!
