Everyone’s coming over for wine at eight and the refrigerator contains exactly one-half of a container of Greek yogurt and two items that might have, at one time, been grapes.  Although running in to your local grocery store on the way home from work will certainly give you some decent cheese options why not plan to go big at one of the wonderful cheese shops that DFW has to offer? Seriously, how many more times are you going to slice squares of a national brand of pepper-jack?

A good cheese shop will have a staff that knows about the products they sell and can help you choose the best cheese for both your event and your sandwich. There will be a lot of unique, artisan and farmstand cheeses with unique flavors that are unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. Best of all? You’ll be serving something your friends will be talking about for days, in a good way. Who doesn’t love that kind of attention?

Here are our five picks for the very best cheese shops in the Dallas – Forth Worth Metroplex.

1 Scardello Artisan Cheese

Located on Oak Lawn, you pay hell in frustration inducing parking but once you've paid your dues (and parked your car) you walk into cheese heaven. Over 150 varieties of the most amazing cheese you've never heard of are ready to be sampled, loved, and taken home to be shared or hoarded -- totally up to you. They've also got sandwiches for lunch, classes, and everything you need for the perfect wine and cheese party.

Not only will they help you find exactly what you want, even if you didn't know you wanted it, they also make some of the most amazing gift baskets in the Metroplex. 3 The Mozzarella Company

There aren't many places in our area where you can go and watch your artisan products being made right before your eyes. You can do just that at The Mozzarella Company. They make a variety of fresh cheeses right on site. Praline Ricotta? Burrata? Chile Caciota? It's artisan, it's local, and it's Texas-centric. What's not to love?

4 Veldhuizen Family Farm

Velduizen Family Farm/Facebook
Ok. You've got us. Veldhuizen Family Farm is not in Dallas. It's not even in Fort Worth. It''s a couple hour trek down I-20 to Dublin but this is the real deal. You want the freshest, most farmstead-iest cheese in the state? It's right here. They have their own cows. They have their own farm. The family feeds the cows, milks the cows, and makes the cheese right there. You can order online but they will let you tour the farm and watch cheese being made so make it a family adventure. And hey - you can stop at one of the wineries around Granbury on the way back. Just be sure to call first so they can give you directions -- the GPS directions are off.

5 Murray's Cheese Shop

Murray's Cheese
Murray's Cheese Shop was founded in the 1940s in Greenwich Village in New York and is one of the oldest and most respected cheese shops in the United States. They've recently partnered with Kroger to open kiosks and sell the products in a select number of the stores including Mockingbird Station, Irving and Fort Worth. The kiosks have red and gold banners making them easy to find and ensuring you don't wander over to the store's regular deli counter by mistake. The kiosks have a selection of over 100 cheeses, many from Texas.
