Merce Lluis’ work is unique because she goes beyond just creating beautiful images. The Spanish artist creates characters that seem to breathe right on the canvases they are painted on. Each unique character inhabits a universe of its own, but that universe bleeds over into the real world as the characters seem to come alive and either pop off the canvas or invite the viewer to step into their world.

Merce Lluis not only creates characters that look alive but also characters with a sense of humor. Their mischievous expressions suggest a kind of playfulness that’s difficult to express on a flat canvas, but Lluis does it with flare.

Some of her characters are also depicted in very tender situations, again exuding emotions in a way only she can paint. Those who have the pleasure of viewing her work feel the message she is delivering a deep and personal way. Some paintings deliver a warning, while others invite the viewer in for playtime or a cup of tea. Still others seem to extend an invitation to take a trip to faraway, exotic places.

Merce Lluis’s work is also marked by an explosion of color and shapes. She shows a clear mastery of the paintbrush and canvas as she mixes colors and cuts silhouettes in her own style.
