Sports stars, philanthropists, television anchors and scientists descended on the Napa Valley for The 17th Annual V Foundation Wine Celebration, held Aug. 6 through 9 and hosted by Mike Krzyzewski, coach of the reigning NCAA champion Duke Blue Devils, and his wife Mickie Krzyzewski. The weekend included a cancer research symposium, elegant luncheons and dinners at wineries, late-night parties and a posh gala dinner at Nickel & Nickel in Oakville, where Huey Lewis & The News performed after a spirited auction helped the event raise a record-breaking $10.6 million. One hundred percent of The V Foundation’s direct cash donations are used to fund cancer research. Sponsored by ESPN, Nickel & Nickel and Bentley Motors, the event benefits The V Foundation for Cancer Research, which was started by Jim Valvano, the late North Carolina State basketball coach-turned ESPN commentator, and ESPN in 1993. Julie Allegro co-founded and chairs the yearly celebration.
