We don’t have to search far to find the 100 most intriguing and successful people in San Francisco, but it can be quite a task to keep up with them. As such, a yearly update just isn’t enough.
DICK COSTOLO OUT AT TWITTER; JACK DORSEY IN
On June 11, Dick Costolo announced his resignation as CEO of Twitter, effective July 1, and Jack Dorsey will replace him on an interim basis at the company Dorsey co-founded in 2006, where he was once the CEO. Costolo had been under pressure from Twitter’s board and Wall Street; he says he told the board that he wanted to leave at the end of last year and his departure had been in the works for months. “I am tremendously proud of the Twitter team and all that the team has accomplished together during my six years,” Costolo said in a statement announcing the resignation. Because the move was voluntary, Costolo won’t receive any severance and he forfeits his unvested stock options. However, he will remain on the board. Dorsey will not receive immediate compensation, and he will also continue to serve as the CEO of Square, his online and mobile payments startup. Costolo has said he is unsure of his next move. “I always advise people going through these transitions to take some time off, so I’m going to try and do as I say,” he said. Dorsey and Costolo have said that they would also continue to have dinner together on Tuesday nights as they have been long doing.
MICHAEL MINA TO OPEN ANOTHER SF RESTAURANT
James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Mina’s restaurant management company, Mina Group Inc., has taken ownership of the building at 2120 Greenwich Street in San Francisco’s Marina/Cow Hollow area and plans to open a neighborhood eatery there. The 1,600-square-foot space, previously the home of Café Claude Marina, will re-open this summer with a series of pop-ups, offering a glimpse into the influences that inspire Mina and his team of rising star chefs. The first pop-up will be a passion project between Mina and chef Adam Sobel, inspired by their Middle Eastern roots—Mina born in Egypt, and Sobel, who has roots on both sides of the Mediterranean. With a strong desire to explore their heritage while cooking food that is close to their hearts, the duo will introduce a celebration of eastern Mediterranean cuisine, combining the flavors of Israeli, Turkish, Egyptian, and Lebanese cuisines with the California farm-to-table approach.
JOE LACOB & STEPHEN CURRY WIN THE 2015 NBA TITLE
Golden State Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob and the team’s star player, Stephen Curry, are NBA champions. The team won its first trophy in 40 years after defeating LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in a thrilling, six-game series that concluded on June 16. Lacob, who has been with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers since 1989, purchased the Warriors five years ago and rebuilt the team, not always to the liking of the fans. “You know, they say life is about experiences,” Lacob said at the championship parade in Oakland on June 19. “I’m not sure many people can say they’ve been booed by 20,000 people and cheered by a million people, all in a period of three years. That’s an experience.” On May 4, Curry was announced the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the 2014-15 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player after leading his team to a franchise-record and NBA-best 67 wins in the regular season.
