Boston Park Plaza Hotel Completes $100M Renovation

Transformation. It’s a word that the Boston Park Plaza Hotel knows all too well. After all, the property has just completed the first two phases of a massive three-phase $100 million renovation, thanks to Sunstone Hotel Investors, Inc., which purchased the property in 2013.

Gone are the traditional look and feel to the hotel that got its start in Boston in 1927. The extensive facelift has not only brightened up the first floor lobby that now features light marble flooring, but adds a wow factor with its soaring floor-to-ceiling columns and a hip guest check-in station. If you loved the iconic crystal chandeliers that hung prominently from the ceilings here, you will be glad to know the historic pieces have all been restored and still hang from its famous ballroom.

Earlier this year, The Varano Group opened STRIP by Strega here, a stylish steakhouse by Boston based restaurateur Nick Varano. Since completing this first phase of construction, the hotel has also unveiled Off The Common, a sexy new restaurant and lounge concept that offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails.

Since its inception, the hotel has welcomed prominent names from Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Katherine Hepburn and Judy Garland. The historic Back Bay hotel was actually the site from which British troops embarked for the battle of Lexington. Today, it remains popular with not only tourists, but locals as well, who book a weekend staycation here.

Included in the now completed renovations is the addition of retail space, a David Barton Gym health center along with other structural upgrades such as a new roof and upgraded HVAC system. The hotel relocated its on-site office space from the mezzanine level to the third floor, giving way to an additional 6,000 square feet of meeting and pre-function space. This summer, the hotel will also replace its signature two-story decorative windows.

The final phase of the renovations, which will be complete by June 2016, will include a renovation of all guest rooms, suites, bathrooms and corridors, along with the replacement of all furniture, fixtures and equipment.

The Boston Park Plaza is located at 50 Park Plaza at Arlington Street in Boston.
