Although summer doesn’t officially start until June 21, we’ve booked every weekend from now until mid-September with some sort of sun-soaked adventure. Whether you’re at the Coppola pool, lounging by the Russian River or on a boat in the middle of Lake Tahoe, it’s important to take care of your lady grooming before you leave San Francisco. Wondering where to go? Here are the top 5 places to get smooth, perfectly soft waxed skin.
Nestled in between Sabrosa and Wells Fargo on Fillmore Street almost at Lombard is a quiet waxing studio that you might miss as you walk by. Take a closer look at the red door and you’ll notice the honey bee crest that is the Marina salon’s logo. You’ll need a secret code to enter and for good reason, the atmosphere at Habit is quiet and discrete and the decor homey and eclectic. There’s always a moody, but beautiful floral arrangement and each of the rooms is covered with interesting vintage artifacts that you wouldn’t normally find in a beauty salon. Think an old-timey ship in a glass case, rustic plaid curtains, and a fossilized jaw of a dead animal. There’s nothing sinister about the space though, it’s all 100-percent charm and class thanks to the amazing small team who mix clients an alcoholic beverage while they strip down and who share skincare wisdom and funny anecdotes while getting down to business. Founder Carrie Maxwell and long-time long-time Habit gal, Amanda Toscano, are two estheticians who provide the utmost of services.

2 The Social Beauty Company
Also in the Marina, this time on Lombard Street, is the Social Beauty Company. Owners Nicole Tott-Berger and Julia Solorzano are known for providing unparalleled service in a calm, girlie, and relaxing setting. Solorzano is something of a local brow celebrity and if you’re in need of a brow shaping (or any facial hair removal), she’s your girl. The best thing about the Social Beauty Company is it’s your one stop shop for all things beauty. Need a bikini wax, spray tan, and blow out all before you board that jet to Costa Rica? You can get it all taken care of at this friendly and pretty salon.

3 Sugar Skincare
Worried about waxing destroying your skin? Head to Sugar Skincare, a perfect little private studio in Japantown that specializes in threading, a more gentle technique that achieves the same results as a traditional wax. The staff is wildly nice and make you feel comfortable as soon as you enter off of Buchanan Street. Our favorite is Patty — she’s an expert with eyebrows. Sugar Skincare also offers an assortment of rejuvenating facial and body services: we love their exfoliating back treatment that smooths skin until it glistens. It’s a necessary program if you’re planning on wearing a backless dress to an upcoming gala.

4 Stript Wax Bar
With over eight locations all across the Bay Area (in SF, Stript can be found downtown, on Union Street, and in Noe Valley) and one in Los Angeles, Stript has mastered the wax and then some. The Stript studio is feminine and boudoir-like with plush velvet couches, ornate white marble chandeliers, and damask pale pink wall paper. One of the best things about Stript is that they almost always have same day appointments and are super efficient. Stript also offers depilar, a more permanent way of hair removal that’s less costly than laser hair removal.

5 La Tira
For those who can’t get to the Marina for a wax, we recommend you head to Noe Valley’s La Tira salon. La Tira started as a pop-up in 2013 in the back of a hair salon and quickly developed such a following that founder Christine moved to her own space. Now the team features six experienced waxologists who specialize in everything from waxing for pregnant women to brow shaping to gentlemen’s bikini waxing. The space is airy and bright with turquoise accents and intimate treatment room.
