Art Basel 2014 Wrap-Up: FIATs, Diamonds, Roberto Cavalli and More

A week has passed since the end of Art Basel Miami, and we’re still dreaming about all of last week’s one-of-a-kind art events, luxury auctions, celebrity sightings and haute South Beach parties.

Here are just a few more of our favorite highlights from our Basel 2014 adventures:

TUESDAY: DECEMBER 2nd

“Post Punk Innovation Cocktail”

Miami Ironside, Design District

2T5A3044

On Tuesday, December 2nd, guests of Miami Ironside’s exclusive cocktail got a sneak peak of the latest works from Israeli-born industrial engineer and architect, Ron Arad. Part of an 8-day inaugural “Design Escape” affair – one that includes out-of-the-box art exhibitions, a FIAT 500 showcase by official automotive partner FIAT, panel discussions, music performances, a Mindball Interactive Gaming Experience, a Standseven pop-up design shop and catered events by celebrated Italian restaurateur Tommaso Morelato of Miami’s Toscana Divino – this invitation-only Post- Punk Innovation event served as a tribute to the artist’s collaborations with luxury brands FIAT and Moroso.

Recognized worldwide for his constant experimentation with different materials like steel, aluminum and polyamide – as well as his radical reconception of the form and structure of furniture – Ron Arad used this event to debut both his lounge furniture collection with Moroso and his new FIAT 500 Ron Arad Edition.

WEDNESDAY: DECEMBER 3rd

Coming to Art Basel Miami from The Netherlands, artist Theo Jansen brought with him a new type of art animal: his Strandbeests. Using nothing but PVC piping, wood and wing-like sails, to create these wind-powered, mechanical “beasts” – which take close to a year to make and walk on the sand without any electric or human aid. That Wednesday morning, the Dutch artist let his creatures loose on the sand, at sunrise, on Miami’s 22nd and Collins Avenue beach for a group of impressed art enthusiasts, engineers, media moguls and intrigued passersby.

“Roberto Cavalli Presents The Roberto Cavalli Home Collection”

Cavalli Lounge, South of Fifth

Last Wednesday night, South Beach’s finest headed to 150 Ocean Drive to celebrate the latest additions to the Roberto Cavalli Home collection with a VIP, invitation-only event at the swank Cavalli Lounge. While beats were spun by While Lady Starlight, the official DJ of Lady Gaga, attendees of the event — which included dress-to-impress “fashionistas” from Miami’s social scene — pulled up one of the lounge’s fashionable leopard-print chairs, sipped on bellinis and vodka cocktails, and perused the latest unique tableware collection from Roberto Cavalli Home.

THURSDAY: DECEMBER 4th
