Top 5 Truffles in Town

NEXT POSTPISTE Returns To Archer Street

White truffles are in season at last, and November is when they reach their peak. The ultimate sign of indulgence, this earthy diamond is autumn’s gift to the kitchen, one that can transform even the most humble dish into gold. The Tuber Magnatum is foraged in Italy, with the Alba truffle from the Piedmonte region considered the cream of the crop. So seductive is this specimen that it sells for anything between $10,000 and $15,000 per kilo, with record $330,000 paid for a 1.5 kilogram white truffle by Macau-based billionaire Stanley Ho in 2007.

Fancy breaking his record? Here’s where to hunt out London’s top truffles.

1 Daphne’s

Daphne’s is revelling in the season with truffles served straight up on tagliatelle, risotto, carpaccio, and caprissima cappelletti, as well as in dishes such as Pan-Fried Duck Livers with Porcini and Polenta. Diners are encouraged to go wild: truffles can be added to absolutely anything on the menu. Truffled cassata, anyone?

2 Bobo Social

Not every truffle experience needs to be grandiose. Bobo Social specialises in small plates and some of the best burgers in town, now being served with added magic. The Debauchery burger is a feast of Wagyu Beef, Ogleshield Cheese, Confit Shitaki Mushrooms, Bacon Mayo, Truffle and Onion Compote, with additional truffle shaved on top for good measure. Vegetarians also get a look in, with the Mushrrom Truffle burger and Guacamole.

3 Murano

Angela Hartnett gained a Michelin star for Murano, after just 4 months of opening, and it remains one of the best Italian experiences in Mayfair and beyond. Truffles are arriving in mid-November and for a supplement of £50 you can add Alba white truffle to any dish on the menu. Alternatively, try a simple hand-rolled tagliatelle with shaved truffles or the rich risotto with Parmigiano Reggiano, Baked Vacherin Mont D’or and Italian scrambled eggs.

4 Coq d’Argent

Coq d’Argent is serving a dedicated white truffle tasting menu this year: grilled foie gras with truffle sauce, sea bass with truffle risotto, apple and truffle sorbet and and bitter chocolate fondant with truffle ice-cream are just some of the dishes you can expect. For a real city-style blow out, opt for the paired wine flight.

5 Little Social

Part of Jason Atherton's excellent restaurant empire, Little Social is now offering a seasonal truffled menu featuring burrata, Jerusalem artichoke risotto and a decadent pomme purée. If these dishes don't sate you, nip across the road to Michelin-starred sister site Pollen Street Social, and indulge with a whole roasted duck for two, sautéed ceps, celeriac and white truffle, with a spiced leg salad.
