Martini at Musso & Frank
Martini at Musso & Frank

Whether you like them shaken or stirred, there’s no denying that these five libations are the very best martinis you’ll find in the City of Los Angeles.

1 "New Way" Dirty Martini at The Bazaar by José Andrés

Trust master innovator José Andrés to do things in a new way. He succeeds quite well with his take on the classic dirty martini with his "New Way" Dirty Martini, which features a spherified "liquid" olive (a molecular mixology trick) and olive brine "air." Kitschy? Yes. Amazing. You bet.

2 The Sabrinatini at Barton G.

We love, love, love the crazy, fun and visually stunning creations at Barton G. Weiss's new LA hotspot, Barton G. One of our favorites is the Willie Wonka-esque eatery's signature, the Sabrinatina: orange vodka and watermelon liqueur adorned with a nitro-champagne swizzle stick and a chocolate monkey in homage to the brand's mascot, Sabrina the monkey.

3 The Classic Martini at the Polo Lounge

If there's a more elegant place to sate yourself with a shaken (or stirred) martini in Beverly Hills than the Pink Palace's Polo Lounge, we haven't found it. Though a standard tipple is tops here, we like the fresh new selections such as the Midnight Lavender, a mixture of Bombay Sapphire Gin, lavender simple syrup, dry vermouth and orange bitters, or the quintessential classic martini—hold the vermouth.

4 The Classic Martini at Musso & Frank

Musso & Frank isn't just a Hollywood institution, it's also a classic. This spot is a throw-back to the Golden Era of Hollywood, and its martinis follow suit. Make like Sinatra as you sit at the dark, wood-paneled bar and a waiter in a pristine red tuxedo comes by to elegantly inquire what madame or mister is drinking this evening. Whether your order up and dry or up and dirty, like Frank, you'll feel like you're flying to the moon.

5 The Edison at The Edison

We love everything about the speakeasy-esque bar The Edison in downtown LA and are especially fond of the establishments Prohibition-era martinis. Sip the signature cocktail—The Edison (naturally)—Woodford Reserve Edison barrel bourbon, pear cognac, lemon and honey, and you'll feel like you've been transported back in time to a cooler, more illicit era.
