We’ve had the wind and rain and now it’s time for some fun in the sun. The capital is set for a warm weekend with temperatures hitting the 20s. And luckily for us London is packed with rooftop restaurants and bars that are perfect for al fresco eating and drinking when the sun finally shows up. Here’s five of our favourite rooftop hangouts
1 Aqua Spirit
When the sun shines, Aqua Spirit – a stunning Regent Street rooftop terrace – is our destination of choice. This is partly for the fabulous views of the Soho skyline and partly because of Aqua Spirit’s killer cocktails. The Carrabbas – Santa Teresa rum, fruit liqueurs, fresh orange juice and cinnamon syrup – is the bijoux bar’s best seller but in such stunning surroundings, it seems a shame not to sip a champagne cocktail.
Situated on the top of the Jean Nouvel designed One New Change complex overlooking the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, Madison’s makes for a memorable experience. From the glorious views of the London skyline to the fabulous food. There’s a formal restaurant specialising in British fare plus a fun tapas bar: think small plates that lend well to sharing with friends. Of course you can just drink here: top-notch cocktails include the cheekily named ‘Hot Bitch Martini’
Located on the site of the old Marconi House, this relative new (Radio opened during summer 2013) kid on the roof top block oozes glamour – think candles and Ibiza-esque sofas. Much like Chiltern Firehouse, getting into Radio can be a challenge but the stunning south facing views – expect to see both Big Ben and the Oxo Tower – reward any effort involved. The cocktails hit the spot too. Don’t miss the Mile High Margarita, Radio-Active and AM/FM which you can enjoy until 3am
4 Sanctum Soho
The £10 million Sanctum Soho is the brainchild of Mark Fuller – founder of celebrity haunts Embassy and The Sugar Reef. There’s a lot to love about London’s first rock ‘n’ roll hotel – don’t miss the diamante door handles and plush private 45 seat cinema. However the real star is the 24-hour rooftop bar: sip champagne while submerged in a hydro spa that comes complete with multi-coloured underwater lights!
5 Vista at The Trafalgar
Vista bar at the Trafalgar Square Hotel has many points in its favour: a central London location, casually fashionable decor (lots of black wicker), classy cocktails and unrivalled views: you’ll get to gawp at Nelson’s Column, the London Eye, Big Ben and the Barbican. Bottom line? This is one of, if not the best, rooftop terraces in town, providing a welcome respite from the tourist trap down below that is Trafalgar Square
