San Francisco may be a vegetarian’s mecca, but carnivorous cravings are never far away. Who needs a reservation at Peter Lugar’s in Brooklyn when so many locals are doing it right? From medium rare to well-done, here are our top five steakhouses that made the cut.

1 Alexander's Steakhouse

If there is one steakhouse that you should to try before you die, Alexander's should be it. An Alexander steak is by far the most rich, buttery, amazing steak you'll ever have. Not to mention that the restaurant has amazing customer service. We recommend starting with the Hamachi Shooters, one of the memorable items on the menu. Mac & Cheese, Roasted Brussels Sprouts and house made bread deserve honorable mentions, after the steak, of course.

2 Harris' Restaurant

Harris' is one true, class act steakhouse. They serve a range of fantastic steaks with a wide selection of wines, not to mention they've got one delicious creme brulee dessert. We could never forget about the ambiance: old-fashioned fabulous sums it up. Dim lights, old fashioned furniture and speedy but kind service makes Harris' a worthwhile stop on the 'Frisco map.

3 5A5 Steak Lounge

5A5 boasts one of the most beautiful spaces in San Francisco. Since taking over the spot of it's predecessor Frisson, 5A5 has steadily gained popularity and has proven that it's here to stay. You cannot leave without trying the Japanese wagyu and prime rib. As an added bonus, the bar mixes a great drink and service is exceptional.

4 Osso Steakhouse

This Nob Hill newcomer is not your usual classic steakhouse. They do not grill the steaks over open flame; rather, steaks are cooked in a pan with a delicious light rosemary garlic sauce. The bone in New York steak is really, really tasty! Not to mention that the the interior decor is a very cool combination of art-deco, leather booths, upscale bistro, with a light touch of Las Vegas. Now how can you resist all of that? As they say, it's Osso good!

5 Leatherneck Steakhouse

With spectacular views and service, you cannot go wrong at Leatherneck Steakhouse. Located on top of the Marine hotel on Sutter street, Leatherneck is all about romance. Dim lighting, background piano make for an intimate steakhouse experience amidst the amazing backdrop of the city. Steak is definitely a five-star experience, but don't forget about the truffle tater tots and roasted garlic.
