More than 200 fourth and fifth grade students from McWilliams Elementary enjoyed an extraordinary field trip experience at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin with interactive breakout sessions on Monday. Dividing into several groups, the Las Vegas youth heard from Wells Fargo representatives on the values of financial literacy while UnitedHealthcare offered a health and wellness program. Walking through the Renewable Generations Trailer, the students also received a first-hand look at various renewable energy projects from NV Energy.

The City of Las Vegas’ Fire Safety House was also on-site to provide a demonstration on how to stop, drop and roll and the importance of fire safety. Inside the mobile classroom, a flavored vapor was used in order to show the proper methods to safely escape a building in case of a fire. Rounding out the afternoon, the Discovery Children’s Museum offered a hands-on health sciences program and The First Tee of Southern Nevada partnered with members of the UNLV’s Professional Golf Management program for full-swing golf instructions for all participants. The kids also enjoyed a well-balanced lunch provided by Subway before heading back to school.

Joining Charley Hoffman, PGA Tour professionals and amateurs came out to participate in Hoffman’s foundation Las Vegas Pro Am. Providing a clinic for participants, Hoffman offered guidance and helpful tips before the shotgun start. Additionally, students from Manch Elementary joined the amateurs for the clinic followed by a tour of the Travis Mathew Awesome bus. The students are recipients from Blessings in a Backpack, a local charity providing free meals to local youth on the Free and Reduced Price Meal Program that the Pro Am supports each year. The Pro Am also raises funds for four local charities including Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Las Vegas and the Transportation Fund of the local Zelzah Shrine Temple.
