1 Harbor House Cafe

Those seeking an authentic American diner should head straight to the sleepy O.C. town of Dana Point. It doesn't matter when you arrive: the Harbor House Cafe is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. There's comfort in consistency with classic favorites like sirloin steak, peach cobbler, root beer floats and good, old-fashioned malteds. The Harbor House hasn't changed much in its 60 years of operation, and that's a good thing.

2 Kate Mantilini

If you're searching for a gourmet, glamorous alternative to the typical diner, your best option is Kate Mantillini in Beverly Hills. Designer comfort food takes on new meaning with the eatery's fabulous chicken pot pie, smashed potatoes and special meatloaf. If you're looking for something a bit different, try the Wildly Wonderful Cannes Film Festival Salad. Why not add some variety to your life?

3 Nickel Diner

The Nickel Diner may have the most innovative diner food you'll be likely to find in LA. It's classic food with a twist. There are homemade mixed-berry jam pop-tarts, delightful maple bacon donuts, catfish with corn cakes and pecan sauce, to name a few signature dishes you'll find at this downtown hot spot. The Nickel even caters to vegetarians with items line quinoa-stuffed avocados. In a word: yum.

4 Paul's Coffee Shop

Paul's Coffee Shop is the little diner that could. It was a favorite among O.C. locals for its excellent, home-style breakfasts before Guy Fieri made it infamous on his Food Network show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri." If you can order one thing (and you'll only be able to eat one given the generous portions), tackle the SOS -- two slices of toast with eggs and sausage gravy poured on top, served on a metal mess tray.

5 101 Coffee Shop

The kitschy 101 Coffee Shop is a late night haven for everyone who's anyone in Hollywood. In fact, despite it's celebrity following, this is a spot pretty much beloved by everyone for its laid-back vibe and true Americana fare like barbequed chicken and mashed potatoes. If you're on a late night date, order one of the amazing milkshakes -- and one straw.
