Jay-Z announced the release date for his new solo album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, in a Samsung commercial during yesterday’s NBA Finals Game 5. On July 4, rap fans can celebrate both the national holiday and the national icon’s latest musical venture.
The three-minute ad offers fans glimpses into his studio collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz and Rick Rubin, along with insight into the inspiration behind the beats. “The album is about, like this duality of how do you navigate through this whole thing, through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself,” Jay-Z reveals.
The first lucky one million Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy Note II users can download the album at no cost on July 4,12:01 a.m. EST on the phone’s Magna Carta app. For the rest of Jay-Z’s faithful listeners, the album officially drops three days later.
Although the beloved rapper has recently worked with Kanye West and Justin Timberlake, Magna Carta Holy Grail will be his first solo studio album in four years and his 12th album in total. Jay-Z’s album will likely skyrocket along with fireworks on the 4th, just like 2009’s The Blueprint 3.
