Get Running: Aspen Valley Marathon In July

If running 26.2 miles is in your potential plans for summer, there’s still time to commit to the Aspen Valley Marathon, which takes runners from Aspen to Basalt on July 20. The Boston Marathon-qualifying event descends roughly 1,300 feet through the Roaring Fork Valley from Aspen’s Wagner Park to Lions Park in Basalt. It’s a chance to test one’s mettle at altitude and pick up some speed on the downhill course.

The Aspen Valley Marathon also offers a half-marathon and five-kilometer race. The marathon begins at 7 a.m., the half at 8 a.m.. and the five-kilometer at 10 a.m. All races follow the the Rio Grande Trail, which is primarily paved with sections of dirt. Aspen Valley Marathon
