Art Basel, the eponymous art fair that began in Basel, Switzerland, has planted its flag on yet another continent with Art Basel in Hong Kong which opens Thursday. Like Art Basel Miami Beach, the show promises to put its own spin on the blue-chip art fair, which hosts the Vernisage on Wednesday evening. The show will be divided into four sectors: Galleries, Insights, Discoveries and Encounters, which features large-scale works and installations curated by Yuko Hasegawa. Artists will be both famous names and emerging art talent from the east and west. A series of talks and other activities are also planned.
Gallerist Lexïng Zhang, who owns Art Lexïng in Miami, and has shown at Art Asia for the last three Miami Art Weeks, is in Hong Kong for the fair. Zhang said, “I am humbled by the enthusiastic response our contemporary Chinese art collection has received. We are very excited to open this new chapter in Hong Kong’s dynamic arts legacy.” At the inaugural edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, her gallery will be presenting two talented young Chinese artists: Ye Hongxing and Qin Weihong in collaboration with Christian Louboutin.
