As the Oscar ceremony approaches on February 24th, David O. Russell’s film will be clearing the $100 million mark at the domestic box office by the ending of Presidents Day weekend making The Weinstein Co.’s Silver Linings Playbook the sixth best picture to break such a tremendous record.
Just one week before the Academy Awards, Silver Linings had already been nominated for eight Oscars, including best picture. This film is a top-grossing film in U.S. for director David O. Russell, surpassing the 2010 film The Fighter which earned $93.6 million.
As of President’s Day or even Today, Silver Linings has reached $100 million, by Sunday the film grossed domestically $98.5 million. Many were very skeptical after the film’s plan to be released over Thanksgiving nationwide was scrubbed due to poor tracking. People believed that Harvey Weinstein might not ever recover, but thankfully after picking up key nominations and by word-of-mouth the success of Silver Linings began to expand.
“Hitting a $100 million is a tremendous testament to the playability and marketing of the movie. And the cast has been out there everywhere helping,” said Weinstein Co. president of distribution Erik Lomis.
Also nominated for Oscars include four of the film’s stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Jacki Weaver and Robert De Niro.
Silver Linings is the sixth best picture contender to clear $100 million in ticket sales in the U.S. in the most recent years. The top domestic grosser is Lincoln ($176.3 million), coming in at second Django Unchained ($157 million), followed by Les Miserables ($145.5 million), Argo ($127 million) and Life of Pi ($110.8 million). The other three remaining nominees are Zero Dark Thirty that grossed $88 million in North America, along with Beasts of the Southern Wild ($12.1 million) and Amour ($3.5 million).
But if we were to add foreign grossing at the box office the lineup is completely different, with Life of Pi being on top with a total of $577 million in the world, including foreign ticket sales of $466.2 million. Globally Les Miserables earned $378.8 million. Over the weekend at the foreign box office Django cleared the $200 million mark, with a total of $368.6 million worldwide. Argo has taken in a total of $204.1 million with $77.1 million internationally. However foreign audiences have not taken to well to Zero Dark Thirty who has earned only $20 million at the foreign box office, while in select territories Silver Linings has earned $40 million.
