‘The Hobbit’ Breaks Record on Imax Screens, Bringing $15.1 Million

Over the opening weekend of New Line/MGM’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey brought in a whopping $15.1 million to the box office, taking the record for December’s  best performing film.

From 326 domestic Imax theaters, The Hobbit trilogy’s first installment brought in $10.1 million. Along with this great record, the film has also set an international Imax record in December by grossing $5 million at 126 international theaters, including Singapore, Brazil, Turkey, Spain, the UK and Ukraine.

Here’s what Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Filmed Entertainment, said in a statement on Monday: “We are proud to have worked closely with our longtime partners at Warner Bros. and an accomplished filmmaker like Peter Jackson, who has created a story and visual spectacle ideal for The Imax experience.”

Imax is looking forward to great things to come from the success of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey new release as it hits theaters.
