Jim Campell Shines at SF MOMA Award Dinner

Gary Garrels and Jim Campbell

It was a night of bright lights and big stars for Bay Area Artist Jim Campbell at the SF MOMA’s Bay Area Treasure Awards.

For over twelve years, Campbell’s fascinating light installations have become Bay Area favorites at the SF MOMA and around the world.  His stunning “Exploding Views” exhibit was so popular that it was featured at the SF MOMA for almost an entire year.

The artist was honored for his brilliant creations in new media arts with a memorable award ceremony. Guests included SF MOMA benefactors and followers of Campbell’s work.

The evening started with a one-night-only installation in the SF MOMA’s Schwab Room at the Benefactor Reception, then the beautiful St. Regis Hotel served as the backdrop for the intimate award dinner. Before accepting his award, Campbell sat for a special question and answer session, where Campbell revealed his inspiration and his ideas behind his fascinating pieces.

Campbell’s work is not only revered in the Bay Area; around the world his installations have been included in numerous public collections from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, among others.
