‘BANKSY Out of CONTEXT’ Debuts During Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami

One of the most anticipated exhibitions will take place during the 23rd edition of Art Miami and inaugural edition of CONTEXT Art Miami as BANKSY Out of CONTEXT debuts on December 4 with an exclusive VIP Preview.

Art Miami and new photo-sharing platform I PXL U have announced the exhibition, which will consist of “five wall reliefs equaling more than six-and-a-half tons of weight and featuring iconic stencils from world-renowned guerrilla artist BANKSY”.

The artwork is intended to encourage the debate about “site-specific” street art outside of its original content. Though the five walls on display are privately owned and not for sale, collectors, artists, connoisseurs and VIP fair guests will have the chance to acquire works from a limited showing of a selection of artists’ most iconic editioned works, including a rare ‘Kate Moss AP’.

Robin Barton of BANKROBBER, which specializes in salvaging, sourcing and restoring original works by BANKSY, said, “ I am delighted to be given the opportunity to extend this debate through the display of these important early works. Removed from their original context, the question because whether they become the mordant bounty of greedy modern day cultural grave robber’s or represent a unique change to see the exclusive artist’s work up and close and personal, out of context, yet within CONTEXT.”

Attendees will be able to judge BANKSY’s works, which would have been destroyed at their original sites, in a unique setting created by Art Miami and I PXL U in the sprit of expanding the discussion. “Site specificity” is a diverse subject within the art community and, according to the press release, the exhibition will allow visitors to enter the debate and “discuss whether showcasing these works outside their original context is, in fact, an attempt to bring the artist’s message to a wider audience.”

Nicolas Korniloff, director and partner of Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami, said, “We encourage the debate surrounding ‘BANKSY Out of CONTEXT” and site-specific art in general, and are excited to have created an arena where the subject can be discussed not only by experts and connoisseurs, but the public.”

Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami will feature a combined 250,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor curated exhibition surface, becoming somewhat of a “miniature art city in the heat of Miami’s Wynwood Arts District”. In addition to BANKSY’s work, exclusive pieces will be unveiled at both Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami’s VIP Preview on December 4 from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

“I have no doubt that most of BANKSY’s graffiti works would not have survived at their original locations. It is therefore our primary goal to safeguard and preserve these unique works and their critical message, and to share them with as many people as possible,” Stephan Keszler, president and founder of I PXL U, added.

General admission to Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami begins on December 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and runs through the weekend. For more information, visit CONTEXT Art Miami and Art Miami.
