With the New York Yankees trailing the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 in the ninth-inning last night, manager Joe Girardi made a dramatic, unexpected decision to bench the perennially underperforming Alex Rodriguez and swap in Raul Ibanez. “”I told him you’re scuffling right now,” Girardi said. “I’m just going to take a shot.” It was Ibanez’s shots that made all the difference in game three of the American League Division Series: the outfielder hit the tying homer in the ninth that led to extra winnings, then secured a win with another home run in the 12th.
