The fourth annual Lady Filmmakers Film Festival was held in Beverly Hills from September 28-20, recognizing and celebrating the tremendous contribution of women to film and the importance of collaborative spirit amongst men and women.
The primary goal of the festival is to screen entertaining independent international films to show people that they can enjoy Indie films just as much as the big blockbuster. The annual festival promotes artists and musicians while recognizing and empowering women from all ethnic, religious and LGBT communities.
This year the festival quadrupled in attendance with filmmakers and actors from around the world coming together to celebrate their films, attend parties and enjoy educational workshops and panels. The festival screened 51 films from various countries such as Japan, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Finland, France and Spain. To qualify for the festival, movies have to have at least one woman in the role of writer, director, cinematographer, producer, editor or production designer. Over the years, films by up-and-coming and celebrity filmmakers and actors such as Courtney Cox, Danny Glover, Glenn Close, Lilli Taylor, Mel Rodriguez and Stephen Gyllenhaal have been showcased at the festival.
Winners at this year’s festival included:
Best Drama: When you Find Me, directed by Bryce Dallas Howard and produced by Ron Howard.
Best Documentary: Baseball In The Time of Cholera, produced by Olivia Wilde.
Best Feature Film: Ecstasy, by Irvine Welsh.
Best Actress: Kristin Kreuk
Best Actor: Adam Sinclair
Best Supporting Actress: Olivia Andrup
The festival also honored producer Joyce Cox with the 2012 Trailblazer Award and cinematographer Amy Vincent with the 2012 Moving Image Award.
Patricia DiSalvo, the festival’s director and founder, said, “This is a film, music and art festival unlike any other in LA. Independent films from all over the world will be featured at the 4th Annual Lady Filmmakers Film Festival. The festival promotes short and feature movies made by ladies and showcasing and celebrating the viability of films by lady filmmakers, artists, musicians and the men who collaborate with them.”
