Vivienne Tam Designs Signature Fan for Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou

Fashion designer Vivienne Tam has designed a signature fan for the soon-to-open Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou. As one of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s celebrity “fans”, Tam combined a Chinese opera mask with a geometric pattern and a floral motif reflecting Guangzhou’s reputation as a “flower city”.

The well-recognized, visually elegant eleven-bladed Mandarin Oriental fan logo, which is the registered trademark for the Group, is intended to tie together each of the Group’s hotels into a single identity. Each property’s fan is linked to the environment in which the hotel is located, according to the specific attributes of the culture in each location.

Tam is a Guangzhou native who has an emotional attachment to the city. For her design, she was inspired by Guangzhou’s historical trading port and she created a fan symbolizing the city’s abundant and diversified offerings. Featuring a Chinese opera mask with a geometric pattern and a floral motif, the fan was created in a range of vibrant colors reflecting Guangzhou’s fast-paced, modern and contemporary culture.

Tam said of Mandarin Oriental, “We are both perfectionists who continuously strive to be the best. As a fan of Mandarin Oriental, I have no doubt that Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou will deliver the Group’s legendary service to delight its guests. I am proud to design this fan for Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou because I feel like I am part of the Mandarin Oriental family.
