To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the 1812 French invasion of Russia, an art exposition has opened at the Stroganov Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. With 100 pieces reflecting memories of the French invasion, the exposition features paintings, graphics, sculptures and more.
Renowned Russian artists like Alexei Venetsianov and Orest Kirprensky created the pieces exhibited in the exposition, entitled “The Year 1812 in Art Form from the Collection of the State Russian Museum”. With 100 pieces including paintings, sculptures, numismatics, porcelain, glass, furniture and more depicting battles and heroic deeds from the war, the exposition will run through November 11.
English traveler John Thomas James’ album of drawings and wash drawings created between 1813 and 1814 during the Russian part of his travels are also included, along with Mikhail Tikhonov’s “The Execution of the Russians by French Soldiers in 1812” and Kiprensky’s “Portrait of Colonel Yvegraf Davydov”.
1812 holds a significant meaning for Russians as it was a period of heightened patriotic enthusiasm and social unity in the nation.
