After 175 years of French luxury leather, the fashion house opens in London with a Leather Forever exhibition at The Royal Academy Galleries from May 8-27. This free event will showcase the French luxury leather label handbags and much more. This celebration marks the 175th year anniversary of such a luxurious line.
According to Thierry Outin, Hermès UK and Ireland managing director, “2012 is a special year for Hermès, Britain and London.” The luxury leather line was founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès.
“We are celebrating our 175th year, it’s the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics and Hermès wanted to be part of this cultural festival and stage our own event.”
The must-see exhibition will be held at the Royal Academy’s Burlington Garden galleries, free of charge to the public. The show was officially designed by Alexandra Plat, in which he displayed an enormous neon Kelly bag, an artisan room that displayed orange boxes Hermès all over the wall, and an equestrian room that features white sand floor.
In order to make this show come alive it took two artisan workers that were chosen out of 32 Hermès’ French workshops, but the biggest highlight at the exhibition was the 1947 black patent calfskin wheelbarrow commissioned by the Duke of Windsor for Wallis Simpson. Also, a multi-colored saddle that had wings, all in which were showcased behind a thick curtain of curling leather strands. But that was not all; there is an exclusive unveiling of a one of a kind Hermès Passe-Guide handbag that represents Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England when leaving the exhibition. All of these luxury bags will be at Christie’s from May 14-31 to benefit the Royal Academy of Art.
