Vintage Fashion Expo – March 17th and 18th

With the upcoming Gaultier retrospective and opening night gala at the de Young, San Francisco’s fashionables have been whipped into a frenzy of preparations.   Whether it be ordering directly with their sales associates at Nordstroms for current pieces or attending the Decades pop up for vintage gems, another possible treasure trove would be the Vintage Fashion Expo to be held on March 17th and 18th.

But not all vintage is created equal.  While some attempt to pass off yester-years thrift store messes as vintage, true vintage clothing as aided by the definition of Webster’s dictionary is considered representative of the best of a particular year or period.   Think of the vintage Valentino gown that Julia Roberts wore to win her Oscar.   Or the Cartier panther ring with onyx nose and ruby red eyes (not the emeralds they use nowadays).  Or the mythical Elsa Schiaparelli shoe hat .  That’s vintage.  It’s the striking pieces of the past that continue to inspire today.  For example, shocking pink was Elsa’s signature colour and now it’s the must have bright for this spring.

This event will be dedicated to true vintage collectors and lovers with many eras represented.   Attendees in the past have been fashion editors like Hamish Bowles, stylists like Rachel Zoe and fashion plates like Dita Von Teese.   Located in the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco, CA., 635 Eighth St. (@ Brannan) dealers from across the country will be presenting vintage clothing,  hats, shoes, dresses, eye wear and estate jewelry.    Vendors will be bringing iconic labels like Lanvin, Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Halston, Bill Blass, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bonnie Cashin, Claire McCardell.
